non-VMA weekend music highlights & over/under #WorkdayWrapUp theme 8/26

If you missed the MTV Video Music Awards last night, don’t worry!  You didn’t miss much…here’s the one poignant moment (& best live performance) of the show imo…I definitely spent more of the broadcast watching my Twitter feed, which ended up providing more entertainment than this surprisingly lackluster “awards” show.  I shouldn’t say “surprisingly” since we’re talking about MTV (who gave up on the “m” being for “music” long ago), but considering all of the “star” power, I started out kinda looking forward to this VMAs, as a music fan hopeful that we’d get at least a FEW good “water cooler” type moments to talk about today…instead, it’s just guffawing at Miley & Gaga’s performances & Taylor Swift caught cursing at One Direction that seems to have generated any buzz…can’t wait to watch The Colbert Report tonight to hear his take, since Daft Punk didn’t perform as promised!  Could Daft Punk backing out at the last minute be the reason the broadcast ended 8 minutes early (which must’ve been a VMA first!)?  Who knows, with those 2 silent robots!?  My own personal highlight of the night: one of my snarky (but true) post-show comments got retweeted by Superchunk!

In more inspired weekend music news, The Replacements reunited!  Sort of…

The Roots were among an eclectic array of artists performing in Brooklyn (or maybe it was just a ?uestlove DJ set?), but NOT at the VMAs…Google searches show the AfroPunk festival got minimal media coverage (at least after the fact), but I found one decent recap of the busy weekend at least (even if the writer didn’t know “Space Oddity” by Bowie)…

And on the other coast, the FYF fest was going on too!  No wonder the VMAs had trouble booking decent bands, lol!

Every Weekday at 6pm, we do a request hour with a different theme, started by the New Song of the Day.  Here’s what actually got played among the requests tonight…
