The Robert E. Lee statue downtown was vandalized late Monday or early Tuesday. The words “black lives matter” were spray-painted on the monument in Lee Park on Market Street.

Charlottesville Police Lieutenant Steve Upman says it was reported at around 7:30 Tuesday morning. Investigators are looking for suspects. Part of the investigation is whether any nearby cameras could lend help in finding whoever is responsible.

Anybody with information should call City Police at 970-3280 or Crimestoppers at 977-4000.
