The local unemployment rate took a big jump from April to May. The Charlottesville regional jobless rate for May was 4.7%, a full one percent above the April figure. Ann Lang of the Virginia Employment Commission says the statewide rate was .7% higher. Lang says it was due to college graduates looking for work. The Charlottesville area still has the second lowest unemployment figure in the state and is tied with several other localities at 74th lowest in the nation.
