Henrico County Republican Eric Cantor will give up his seat in Congress later this month so he can give his successor an advantage over other new House members who get elected in the fall. Cantor (pictured) has told the Richmond Times-Dispatch he plans to resign his seat as the Seventh District congressman effective August 18th. He’s also informed Governor McAuliffe of his decision so there can be a special election fo complete his term on November 4th, which matches the date of the general election. Thursday was Cantor’s last day as the House Majority Leader and California Congressman Kevin McCarthy (R- Bakersfield) has assumed the second most powerful office in the House. Cantor has endorsed Randolph-Macon College professor Dave Brat, who won the June 10th GOP primary, in the fall elections. Brat’s rivals are Democrat Jack Trammell and Libertarian James Carr.
