City Residents Speak Out On Racial Disparities

A task force that deals with racial disparities wants the city to support programs that inspire young people. Shymora Cooper says there are groups that work with African-American kids, but they don’t get enough support. Cooper lives on Sixth Street Southeast, and is the mother of three. Attorney Jeff Fogel (pictured) helped the task force examine the data on juvenile arrests. The group discovered the total number of juvenile arrests has decreased, but the number of black kids who have been locked up keeps rising. City Councilors will hold a work session on this issue June 26th.
