Former Wahoo Sean Singletary Explains Retirement Decision

One of the few men whose jersey number hangs in the rafters at John Paul Jones Arena has decided to hang up his own uniform. On Monday, former UVA basketball legend Sean Singletary announecd his decision to retire from professional basketball. Singletary, a 3-time First Team All-ACC while at Virginia, saw time in 37 NBA games during the 2008-2009 campaign. He would spend the next 5 seasons playing professionally in Europe or the NBA’s Development League.

An All-American in 2008- his final season in the Cavalier Orange & Blue- Singletary joined the Best Seat in the House on Wednesday night to explain his thought process. “I feel as though it’s just the best decision for me at this point in time in my life,” said Singletary. “I’m really ready to give back to the community of Charlottesville in any way.”

For the man who wore #44 on grounds, the attractiveness of calling central Virginia home cannot be overstated. Singletary said, “I have the opportunity to be in such a great town with great people- genuine and sincere people- and you’ve got to take that opportunity.” As for any future plans, he added,” I want to continue to work some way in basketball: coaching, personal training, managing, anything; but like I said, to be able to do it in the town of Charlottesville is great.” His wealth of basketball knowledge is already being put to use in the community, as he recently wrapped up a three-day camp for 8-17 year-old kids.
