Lawmakers Want Compensation For Eugenics Survivors

Two House of Delegates members are making another attempt to compensate people who were involuntarily sterilized  during a 20th-century practice called eugenics. More than 8000 Virginians were sterilized beginning in the 1920’s and continuing until the Vietnam War era. Republican Bob Marshall (pictured) of Prince William and Democrat Patrick Hope of Arlington are sponsoring legislation to award surviving victims $50,000. The director of the Christian Law Institute says seven Virginia survivors of eugenics have been identified.  The General Assembly has rejected prior attempts to compensate victims of the eugenics movement.
