McDonnell Trial Day 7

Jurors heard from former governor Bob McDonnell’s Senior Policy Adviser, Jasen Eige, on Tuesday. He was asked to describe his thoughts on Anatabloc’s proposed launch in the Executive Mansion. Anatabloc is the chief product of Jonnie Williams, the man who gave McDonnell and his wife, Maureen, $165,000 in cash, gifts and loans in exchange for promoting his products. He responded that he didn’t think it was “an appropriate use of state property.” The event was then downgraded to a working luncheon during which Williams awarded $200,000 in grants to both the University of Virginia and Virginia Commonwealth University. The money was distributed with the understanding that it would be used to study Anatabloc. The woman who handled Bob McDonnell’s schedule also testified for the prosecution in the corruption trial. Monica Block talked about events the former first couple attended with Jonnie Williams. One was a last-minute addition to McDonnell’s schedule while the General Assembly was in session. Block thought that was unusual at the time. Another witness was a former health adviser. Molly Huffstetler says she met with Maureen McDonnell and businessman Jonnie Williams to discuss a nutritional supplement made by Williams’ company. The governor had asked that somebody from Huffstetler’s office attend the meeting. Huffstetler said Williams did most of the talking. Williams told Huffstetler that the governor said a state tobacco commission was going to finance a study of his chief product. But she says nothing ever came of the meeting.
