The prosecution will rest its case by Thursday. That’s what government attorneys have told a federal judge in the McDonnells’ trial. The jury will take Friday off while both sides work on motions. The defense teams for the former governor (pictured right) and onetime First Lady (pictured left) will begin their case Monday. An FBI agent testified that the former first couple once had more than $90,000 in credit card debt and that a family real estate partnership lost more than $80,000 in just two years. David Hulser’s testimony bolstered the prosecution’s claim that the McDonnells were in dire financial straits. Virginia Beach Mayor William Sessoms who’s testifying about Bob McDonnell’s application to refinance a loan on a beach rental property. Sessoms said McDonnell never mentioned debts to Jonnie Williams in his application to refinance. A defense attorney says the Williams loans went to Maureen McDonnell and to a company owned by the former governor and his sister. Bob McDonnell was the sole borrower on the TowneBank loan. Sessoms says a corporate debt technically does not have to be listed on an individual financial statement, but a bank needs to know about shared debts.
