There was a slight decline in the Virginia unemployment rate in January compared to December. It went down .1% in January and is .7% lower than a year ago.
The unemployment rate of 4.1% is the lowest since July 2008. Virginia had the lowest unemployment rate among the Southeast states and had the fourth best rate among states east of the Mississippi River. Virginia’s job growth of 2.3% surpassed the national growth rate of 1.9%.
The average weekly wage for private employers in the state was $919.77 in January, which is 3.4% higher than a year ago.
