The Sons of Confederate Veterans hosted a weekend rally in Lexington to voice support for the Confederate flag. They are protesting a decision by the Washington and Lee University President to remove some reproduction flags from the school’s Lee Chapel. The flags were taken out following complaints by some African American students. Rally speaker Gene Hogan says the Confederate flag is an American flag. The rally attracted women in 19th-century clothing and men in Confederate uniforms. There were no confrontations with people who support Washington and Lee’s decision to remove the reproduction flags.
