Virginia freshman defensive tackle Andrew Brown, the Gatorade National Football Player of the year, will attend tonight’s ESPY awards in L. A. which will be televised live on ESPN.  Brown earned the invitation to the ESPY’s by being nominated for the Gatorade National Male Athlete of the year award.  That award was given to Karl Towns, a 7ft basketball player headed to Kentucky at a ceremony held last night in Los Angeles.  Towns edged out nominees Trentavis Friday, a sprinter from Cherryville, North Carolina; distance runner Grant Fisher of Grand Blanc, Michigan; pitcher Justus Sheffield of Tullahoma, Tennessee; soccer player Abu Danladi of Los Olivos, California, as well as UVA defensive tackle Andrew Brown who hails from Chesapeake, Virginia.

The athletes will get to attend the ESPY awards tonight as part of the festivities from their nomination for the award.  Brown enrolled in January, and went through spring practice with the Virginia Football Team.  As a 5 star recruit, he is expected to make an impact this year for the Hoos.  Brown says he’s ready for the challenge ” I do feel welcome but yet again that was back in high school and now I gotta set new standards for college.  Just forget everything that happened in high school ..now I’m focusing on the next level and trying to succeed at this level because the game is a whole lot faster.”

WINA’s series “Rise Up, An Inside Look At Virginia Football” continues tomorrow at 6pm on 1070 WINA’s Best Seat In The House.
