A special service for a special veteran Monday afternoon. Luther Payne’s body lay in a hospital¬† morgue for six months. That because no immediate kin could be found to claim his body after his December 2nd death at Martha Jefferson Hospital. Until March, only family members were allowed to bury the 95-year-old’s body. That’s when state lawmakers approved a bill that would let others provide for the burial of unclaimed human remains, as well as allow law enforcement to search for next of kin, which led to police finding Payne’s granddaughter. The Beaver Dam Baptist Church in Troy donated a plot in its cemetery, with a funeral home donating a casket.
