Virginia Powers Past Maryland 7-3 Forcing Decisive Game Three

The University of Virginia baseball program defeated Maryland Saturday afternoon 7-3 to keep the season alive in Super Regional play of the NCAA Tournament. Behind Mike Papi, Danny Pinero, and Kenny Towns, Virginia issued a seventeen hit performance pulling away from Maryland in the late innings to force a game three.
With the score knotted at 1-1, the Cavaliers took control in the 6th when Kenny Towns knocked a double down the left field line. Coupled with an error, Towns would reach third and eventually score on a John La Prise ground ball.
From there Virginia finally broke through with their first multi-run inning of the weekend in the 7th. After loading the bases on Maryland starting pitcher Mike Shawaryn, Derek Fisher, Kenny Towns, and Brandon Downes drove in runs for the Hoos.
In his start from the mound Brandon Waddell picked up the win giving up just one run in six and two-thirds innings, and Artie Lewicki got the save going the remainder giving up two runs, neither of which were earned.
Virginia and Maryland square off again Monday at Davenport Field with a trip to the College World Series on the line. Pregame coverage scheduled for 3:30 on 1070 WINA, although game time is subject to change.
