Virginia has a new structure to showcase its ties to country music. Bristol is the home of the Birthplace of Country Music Museum, which had a grand opening over the weekend. Virginia’s pioneer family of country music includes Scott County native Alvin Pleasant Carter, his wife Sara, and sister-in-law Maybelle. They are the original members of The Carter Family, which won a contract with a major record label in 1927. Maybelle’s daughter, the late June Carter Cash, represents the family’s second generation of singers and songwriters. In the 1940’s, Mother Maybelle, June Carter, and her sisters were weekly performers on the Old Dominion Barn Dance radio program which originated in Richmond.
