VMI Prepares For 150th Anniversary Of New Market Battle

VMI is getting ready for a re-enactment next week of the Battle of New Market.¬† Every cadet at the Lexington school headed north in May 1864 for a showdown with Union forces a few miles north of Harrisonburg. Local historian Rick Britton says Confederate generals expected to use the VMI students as baggage handlers, but they ended up becoming soldiers.¬†Britton notes ten VMI cadets died on May 15th, 1864 or a few days later. Six of them are buried on the VMI campus (pictured). Britton was a recent guest on Charlottesville…Right Now with Les Sinclair.
