The ruby ring which sparked engagement news for Katy Perry and John Mayer earlier this week was just a Valentine’s Day gift from the “Daughters” singer.

Perry was spotted wearing the ring on her wedding finger on Thursday night, prompting gossips to go into overdrive and suggest Mayer had proposed earlier in the evening.

Perry’s people refused to comment but now a source has confirmed Mayer did not ask his girlfriend to marry him on the most romantic day of the year.

And a representative for Santa Barbara, California jeweller Daniel Gibbings has revealed Mayer bought the ring as a Valentine’s Day surprise after selecting it himself.

The rep tells People.com that Mayer was “really super nice” while shopping for his girlfriend.
