CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WINA) – Corey Long, the man accused of shooting an aerosol flame into the crowd at Emancipation Park on August 12, made his first appearance in Charlottesville Circuit Court Tuesday morning.

He is charged with assault and battery and disorderly conduct, but the hearing dealt only with when to hold a status hearing. Attorneys will meet on November 13 to determine the date for a preliminary hearing.

“We are going to let the facts of what happened on August 12th speak for itself here at trial,” said his attorney Malik Shabazz, outside the courthouse. Shabazz, who is the national president of Black Lawyers for Justice, is identified by the Southern Poverty Law Center as a black nationalist.

As Long and his legal team walked away, supporters chanted “Free Corey Long.”
