CHARLOTTESVILLE (WINA) – Charlottesville Fire has released a letter of thanks to the community from the owners of the Excel Inn & Suites which was destroyed in a Thursday afternoon fire. Charlottesville fire investigators say it will be a week or two before the investigation into the cause of the fire is finished. We only know right now it started in a room on the 2nd floor.

Owners Vipul and Manisha Patel write the facility “will be closed indefinitely”.

They continue, “We are lucky to have run a successful business in the heart of Charlottesville, and after 36 years of family ownership, we close for the first time.”

They think Charlottesville firefighters and police, the Red Cross, UVa, Cavalier Inn, DoubleTree, and “many other surrounding area hotels” for their help in this situation. The family writes “we hope to move forward following this major loss”, but there’s nothing in the letter that explains in what capacity.

Charlottesville fire say the Excel Inn & Suites was 17,000 square feet with 32 rooms with a property value at $1.7-million.
