CHARLOTTESVILLE (WINA) – Visitation is set for next Tuesday, and interment Wednesday at Riverview Cemetary for former Lane and Charlottesville High School football coaching legend Tommy Theodose, who passed away last weekend at age 89. Mayor Lloyd Snook, a Lane alum, heard the news before this week’s City Council meeting, and he paid tribute to Thoedose.
He talked about Lane High School’s 53-game unbeaten streak from 1962 through 1967 that received some national attention. Snook also mentioned Theodose coached the first integrated state champion football team in Virginia history in 1963.
Nicknamed the Golden Greek at Lane, he played 4 sports and was all-state and all-American in 1951. He played quarterback and defensive back at the University of Richmond where he was an all-state and all-conference performer. He started coaching in Charlottesville immediately upon finishing his playing days. He was inducted into the VHSL Hall of Fame as well as the University of Richmond Hall of Fame in 1992.
Tommy was preceded in death by his brother, best friend and nemesis, Nicholas George Theodose, and his beloved daughter, Cynthia Evelyn Theodose. He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Cathy Theodose, and several children and stepchildren.
