CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – Additional Augusta County Sheriff’s deputies were at the Riverheads School Complex near Greeneville Friday in an abundance of caution after what turns out to be fictitious threat. Around 7:20 Friday morning, the sheriff’s office received a report concerning a student at Riverheads Middle School making threats to “shoot up the school”.  The initial investigation reveals it as a fictitious threat made up by another student.

With help from school administrators, the sheriff’s office has identified the suspect who is not at school and the investigation continues. There is no threat to the students, staff and the community.  School scheduling and school activities remained normal.

A release said “the ACSO and Augusta County Public Schools remind parents to please monitor, educate, and counsel their children about social media. Students and young adults may think these types of threats are funny, jokes, or used to seek attention. However, the ACSO and School Administrators need parents to understand and explain that these threats have serious consequences. VA Code section, 18.2-60- Threats of death or bodily injury to a person or to a member of is family; threats of death or bodily injury to persons on school property; threats of death or bodily injury to heath care providers is a felony.”
