CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – As the Charlottesville School Board mulls over whether to put “youth resource officers” from the police department into the schools, they’re hearing plenty from the public ahead of an outreach event that’s not until next week. Clayborne Education CEO Lee Elberson works with school students and families, and though the city police chief and schools superintendent have a February survey of support, Elberson says it’s not that cut-and-dry in his venue. He finds students “a little worried about it… parents feel safer with resource officers”.
Elberson says from the parents’ standpoint, it’s covering the spectrum of options that could be dangerous for their kids. However, students feel “if they’re there, something’s wrong” and can be disconcerting.
