CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – Saying the event is about preventing tragedies before they happen, Charlottesville Police Chief Mike Kochis announces the second CPD gun buyback event next Saturday, November 22 at Mt. Zion First African Baptist Church.

The 10 a.m-to-2 p.m. event is at the same place it was at the first such buyback in June where 80 guns were collected.

No identification paperwork is required, and participants will receive gift cards in $25 increments for surrendered firearms.

Kochis said to Cville Right Now back in June it’s not so much numbers he’s looking for, though that will be nice, but if this event prevents one violent crime, it’s worth it.

“Whether it’s turning in an unwanted firearm or learning more about safe storage, every step we take together makes a difference,” Kochis said about next Saturday.

“Our goal is to reduce the risk of gun violence, accidental shootings, and theft, while strengthening trust and partnership between our department and the community we serve.”
