CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – For many older adults, a pet can bring something incredibly valuable to everyday life: companionship, purpose, routine and unconditional love.

At Caring for Creatures, we believe age should never automatically be a barrier to adopting a pet. We welcome senior adopters and enjoy helping them find an animal whose personality, energy level and needs are a good match for their lifestyle.

The key is finding the right fit.

Pets can be wonderful companions as we grow older. A dog can give you a reason to get outside for a walk each day. A cat can be a comforting presence in a quiet home. Simply having another living being to care for can add structure and connection to the day. And, of course, the companionship goes both ways. For an animal waiting for a home, having someone who has the time and desire to share their life can be pretty special too.

When considering adoption, think realistically about both your lifestyle and the animals’ needs. Energy level is important, but so are size, strength, grooming needs, medical care and temperament. Can you comfortably walk the dog you’re considering? Are you prepared for regular grooming? Would you prefer an animal that enjoys a quieter household, or are you looking for a companion to join you on walks and outings?

Age is part of that conversation, but it shouldn’t be the only consideration.

A puppy or kitten could be part of your family for 15 years or more and will require plenty of time, patience and energy along the way. An adult animal may already have a more established personality, making it easier to know whether that animal will complement your lifestyle. And senior pets, who are sometimes overlooked, can make wonderful companions for people looking for a quieter pace.

That doesn’t mean a senior adopter necessarily needs a senior pet. An active older adult may be a great match for a younger dog, just as a younger person may be happiest with a laid-back senior. There isn’t a formula based on age. What matters is finding the right animal for the individual.

That’s where getting to know an animal before adopting becomes so important. At Caring for Creatures, our staff and volunteers spend time with the dogs and cats in our care and learn their personalities, preferences and needs. We can help potential adopters think through what they’re looking for and introduce them to animals who may be a good fit. Sometimes the animal you connect with isn’t the one you expected.

There is one conversation we believe every pet owner should have, regardless of age: What happens to my pet if something happens to me?

Seniors aren’t the only people who may unexpectedly leave a pet behind. Life is unpredictable at every age. Having a plan for your pet is simply part of responsible pet ownership.

Identify a trusted family member or friend who is willing to care for your pet if you no longer can. Talk with them about your wishes rather than assuming they will be able to step in. Make sure someone knows your veterinarian, medications, feeding routine and other important information. And revisit the plan periodically because circumstances can change.

For older adults considering adoption, the question shouldn’t be, “Am I too old to adopt?” A better question is, “What animal is the right match for me?”

Consider your health, activity level, living situation and the amount of daily care you’re comfortable providing. Think about the years ahead and have a plan. But don’t let age alone determine whether you can provide a wonderful home for an animal.

At Caring for Creatures, we know how much animals and people can bring to each other’s lives. The right match can give an animal a loving home while bringing companionship, purpose and joy to the person who welcomes them.

Companionship has no age limit. With the right match, realistic expectations and a plan for the future, adopting a pet can be a wonderful choice at any stage of life.
