CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – A Jewish University of Virginia student is suing the University for failing to respond to antisemitic acts that he claims are committed against him. First-year Matan Goldstein has been on The Schilling Show outlining his experiences which had said has driven him out of living on Grounds, and lives in hiding “taken in by sympathetic families”.
He has outlined antisemitic incidents that have happened to him since the first day in August when moving into his freshman dorm, the first of which he says happened at orientation when he introduced himself as an Israeli student. He said afterwards, an Egyptian student walked up to him saying “you know I hate you, right?”.
Goldstein said harassment and bullying intensified after October 7 to the point where he became scared to wear his yarmulke around grounds.
The suit names President Jim Ryan, Rector Robert Hardie, and the UVA Faculty and Students for Justice in Palestine as defendants. The suit alleges “the University… and these legions of administrators, deans, and vice presidents have thoroughly and completely failed” at protecting against antisemitic discrimination, harassment, abuse, and bullying”.
