CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – The National Weather Service late Thursday morning included the Charlottesville area in a group all over Central and Northern Virginia, nearly all of Maryland, and Eastern West Virginia under an elevated fire risk through 5 p.m.

A special weather statement said, “The combination of 10 hour fuel moistures around 10%, relative humidities around 25-to-35%, and wind gusts 25-to-30 m.p.h., and up to 40 on exposed ridges will lead to an increased risk for the rapid spread of wildfires.”

“This is also being paired with poor overnight recoveries at elevations above 1500 feet, which may even further enhance the threat in those areas.”

The statement said, ” Residents and visitors are urged to properly dispose of cigarette butts, matches, and any other flammable items in appropriate containers. Additionally, exercise caution if operating any equipment that could create sparks and keep vehicles off of dry grass. Most dry grasses, dead leaves, and other tree litter could easily ignite and spread fire quickly. Lastly, remember to obey local burn bans.
