CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – A Skywest Canadair flight from Chicago needed a second attempt to land at Charlottesville Regional Airport on Monday morning after it struck its right wingtip on the tarmac on its first approach.

“SkyWest flight 5532, operating as United Express from Chicago landed safely in Charlottesville, Virginia on Dec. 29 after wind gusts caused a wingtip to briefly contact the runway,” a Skywest spokesperson told Cville Right Now in an email. “There were no injuries and passengers deplaned normally at the gate.”

The Aviation Herald reported the Canadair CRJ-700, registration N779SK, “went around from very low height on approach to Charlottesville’s runway 21 but struck its right-hand wing tip onto the runway surface.”

The report continued, that “the aircraft positioned for another approach to runway 21 and landed safely about 15 minutes later.”

According to the FlightAware data, the flight landed safely at CHO at 11:31 a.m. ET after leaving O’Hare at 7:49 a.m. CT.

“We are aware of the incident involving SkyWest on Dec. 29. As the airport authority, we cannot speak on behalf of the airline or our tenants regarding aircraft-specific details or the circumstances of the event,” CHO spokesperson Stewart Key told Cville Right Now in an email. “Following the incident, the runway was inspected by Airport Public Safety personnel and was deemed safe for continued operations.”
