RWSA Household Hazardous Waste Collection Event on Friday and Saturday


CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – The Rivanna Water and Sewer Authority’s Household Hazardous Waste Collection Event for residents of Albemarle County, Charlottesville, and Scottsville takes place Friday and Saturday at the Ivy Solid Waste & Recycling Center (SWRC) at 4576 Dick Woods Road from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Advance registration is not required.

The free event welcomes paints, petroleum products, household cleaners, pesticides, batteries, fluorescent lights, acids, adhesives, antifreeze, stains, paint thinners, spray paint, inkjet cartridges, photographic chemicals, mercury thermometers, driveway sealers, pool chemicals, resins, thermostats, and other items. The event is one of four free collection days planned during the months of September and October. All five events are intended for residents only and are held at the Ivy SWRC. On September 27, the Ivy SWRC will host a Furniture & Mattress Collection Day from 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM. The free semiannual event accepts recliners, sofas, loveseats, tables, chairs, bed frames, dressers, entertainment centers, mattresses, nightstands, coffee tables, and more. Advance registration is NOT required.

On October 4, the Ivy SWRC will host an Appliance Collection Day from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 pm. The free event accepts refrigerators, freezers, washers, dryers, kitchen stoves, furnaces, water heaters, air conditioners, dehumidifiers, heat pumps, microwaves, and toasters. Advance registration is NOT required.

On October 11, the Ivy RSWA Rivanna Solid Waste Authority will host a Tire Collection Day from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The free event welcomes consumer-bought tires originally installed on passenger cars, pickup trucks, minivans, motorcycles, ATVs, side-by-sides, dirt bikes, lawnmowers, go-carts, and handcarts. Participating households may bring up to twelve tires. Tires do not have to be removed from their rims. Unfortunately, commercial truck tires will not be accepted. Commercial participation is also prohibited. Advance registration is NOT required.

Latex and oil-based paints are accepted for free every day at the Ivy Solid Waste & Recycling Center; just notify the scale house attendant for directions. These services are offered to Albemarle County, Charlottesville, and Scottsville residents only.
