School zone speed cameras activate Wednesday in Cville and Albemarle

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – The Wednesday morning start of school in Charlottesville and Albemarle County means the activation of speed cameras installed in some school zones.

School zone speed limit signs begin flashing their lights an hour before the morning start of school in that zone, and for an hour after the official afternoon dismissal sign.

During those times of the flashing light on school days, the speed enforcement cameras are activated. In Albemarle County, the cameras are along Hydraulic Road and Lambs Lane in the Albemarle High, Journey Middle, and Greer Elementary area, and a new set of cameras on Rockfish Gap Turnpike near Western Albemarle High, Henley Middle, and Brownsville Elementary schools.

Since the Hydraulic cameras have been there since the beginning of the last school year, there is no grace period for citations to be issued for violations confirmed on those. Violators 10-miles-an-hour or more will be issued $100 fines.

The new cameras in the Crozet area will have a 30-day grace period from the August 13 start of school running through September 15.

After that time, 10-and-over violators will be issued citations.

Charlottesville has new speed cameras in the Buford Middle, Johnson Elementary, and Summit Elementary zones.

Some of those cameras were activated at the end of the last school year, but there is a grace period through September 7 at all of these camera zones.

Starting September 8, Charlottesville speed camera violations result in $50 civil fines, and a court date can be requested with a $66 court cost mandated by state law.

This year’s song of the summer is a ballad, not a banger. Here’s what that says about us

For the past 14 weeks and counting, the top Billboard spot has been held by a love ballad: Alex Warren's "Ordinary." As Berklee College of Music professor and forensic musicologist Joe Bennett notes, the February release is "a fair bit slower than the mean average for the Hot 100, or for a historical song of the summer."
