State Senate leader tells Gov. Youngkin not to bother sending any more board appointments

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – The UVA Board of Visitors is meeting five members short of a full board, and it will stay that way for a while if the Senate Democratic leader gets his way. The UVA Board is meeting with just 12 members this week after the Senate Privileges and Elections Committee rejected five Governor Youngkin appointees. In a letter to the Governor, Senate Majority Leader Scott Surovell of Fairfax, a UVA Law grad, requests the Governor to suspend any further appointments to college and university boards. He writes “over the past two months, the Senate has been compelled to reject twenty-two of your nominees to these critical governing bodies. This unprecedented level of rejection reflects not partisan obstruction, but genuine concerns about the qualifications, backgrounds, and intentions of your appointees.”

He writes as Trump Administration interference happens and UVA lost a President because of it, “rather than providing these institutions with the stable, experienced governance they desperately need to navigate these turbulent waters, your appointments have often introduced additional controversy and division and abdicated their responsibilities.”
