Swimmer

Virginia swimming and diving continued its stretch of international competitions this week, with members of the squad at both the Pan Pacific Championships and European Aquatics Championships. Both competitions started Monday.

Current UVA junior Katie Grimes leads the way in the 10-person Virginia contingent at the Pan-Pacific races. She swam in the 10k Open Water Swim Monday afternoon.

The games, taking place every four years, feature competition from at home in the U.S. and abroad from squads from Australia, Japan, Bermuda, and Jamaica.

The event is being held at the William Woollett Jr. Aquatics Center in Irvine, California.

Meanwhile in Paris, four Cavaliers are representing their home nations in the EAC.  Second-year star Sara Curtis races for Italy in the 50 & 100 Freestyle, 50 & 100 Backstroke, and the 50 Butterfly.  Curtis is also on several Italian relay teams.

Also, in the 50 free is second year Nina Jazy, racing for Germany.  Second year Lana Pudar is racing in all three fly events for Bosnia and Herzegovina, and second year Davin Lindholm will go in both the 50 and 100 breaststroke, as well as the 50 free for Finland on the men’s side.

The 2026 European Aquatic Championships are being held at the Centre Aquatique Olympique Métropole du Grand Paris in Paris.

Soccer

Before even playing a game for the Hoos, third year midfielder Arnold Matshazi was named to the 2026 MAC Hermann Trophy Midfielders to Watch list by United States Soccer coaches on Friday.

The English attacker netted 12 goals for the San Jose State Spartans last season, good for second place in the WAC.  They reached the conference final last season, falling 2-1 to Grand Canyon.

The Milton Keynes native has played in multiple levels of the English League, with MK Dons in League Two, and Wycombe Wanderers in League One.  Virginia’s new no.7 and his fellow Cavalier will face UCLA at Klockner Stadium Aug. 20 at 7 p.m. to open the season.

Volleyball

Volleyball will officially be playing three matches at John Paul Jones Arena this season.

The Cavaliers will play their season opener against American on Aug. 30 at JPJ.  Next, they’ll battle Liberty on Sept. 1, before rounding out their JPJ slate with an ACC contest against Miami on Oct. 30.

Basketball

Former Virginia basketball player and coach Isaiah Wilkins has joined the staff of Milwaukee Bucks coach Taylor Jenkins ahead of the new NBA season.  Wilkins served on Ron Sanchez’s staff at Virginia as an assistant, under Tony Bennet as a graduate assistant, and with Mark Madsen at California this past season as an assistant.
