Albemarle Commonwealth’s Attorney Denise Lunsford wants a circuit judge to deny most of the requests from Jesse Matthew’s defense team. The lawyers for Matthew filed 12 motions late last month that deal with evidence and procedures for next year’s trial in Albemarle Circuit Court.
Lunsford filed her response on Thursday. She wants Circuit Judge Cheryl Higgins to deny a request to bar anything that symbolizes support for one of the parties in this case. There have been small ribbons at the University of Virginia that show support for the late Hannah Graham. The 33-year-old Matthew will be tried next July for Graham’s murder.
Lunsford characterizes the request from Matthew’s lawyers as exceptionally broad, and she believes it would be premature to issue a blanket order. Higgins is scheduled to consider the defense team’s requests next Thursday.
