Recent archaeological excavations at Ash Lawn-Highland include foundations of a building that might be a portion of President James Monroe’s original house. Rivanna Archaeological Services uncovered the foundations during a new phase of research earlier this month.

Phase one included a significant deposit of Monroe-period architectural debris in the front yard of a house added by a later owner circa 1870.
