CHARLOTTESVILLE (WINA) – The final credits have rolled on the 36th Annual Virginia Film Festival that combined a remarkable program with fascinating guests and packed houses over five days. The festival with over 120 films October 26 through 29 drew 19,698 attendees to paid and free events… and sold-out 40 screenings.

Festival Director Jody Kielbasa called this year’s “a truly extraordinary festival” which was closed by bringing over 1000 patrons to their feet with his performance after screening of his documentary film “American Symphony”. The film garnered the festival’s Best Documentary Feature award. Ava DuVernay’s film “Origin” — for which she was present to discuss — garnered Best Narrative Feature. And Emmy-winning director, writer, and producer Cord Jefferson got the Breakthrough Director Award after screening for early-season awards front-runner American Fiction.
