WASHINGTON, DC (WINA) – The Justice Department reports UVa law grad and Charlottesville resident Christopher Kavanaugh has been sworn in as the new U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Virginia. The DOJ says the swearing in happened at a private ceremony last Thursday evening at headquarters in DC.

The 41-year old is a career federal prosecutor who began clerking for U.S. District Judge James Cacheris in the Eastern District of Virginia after he graduated from UVa Law. He’s served as an Assistant U.S. Attorney both in Charlottesville and DC… and directed the hate crimes prosecution of James Fields in the August 12, 2017 car attack that killed Heather Heyer. Most recently, he was Senior Counsel to the Deputy Attorney General at the U.S. Department of Justice in Washington, D.C.
