The Shenandoah Valley has the year’s first case of West Nile virus involving a Virginia horse. State agriculture officials say the victim is an eight-year-old paint gelding from Augusta County. The animal had not been vaccinated for the mosquito-borne disease, which can be fatal to horses. Mosquitoes can get the West Nile virus from infected birds and transfer it to humans, horses and other mammals.
