Jim Carpenter Semi-Retires

A local legend is formally calling it a day for his bricks and mortar workplace on Forrest Street. Jim Carpenter is going into a semi-retirement and will continue to do professional photography operating out of his home.

Carpenter is a Charlottesville native who starting taking pictures while he was a student at the city’s old Lane High School. In 1971, he became chief photographer of the Daily Progress. On January 1st, 1988, Carpenter became the top man at Gitchell’s Studio. That business dates back to 1907. You can find photography done by Jim Carpenter and Gitchell’s studios in countless area homes, and in places around the world where UVA alumni are living. The 66-year-old Carpenter was a guest on the Schilling Show.
