Madison man is in jail following the death of 12-year-old Orange County girl

(MADISON – WINA)   A Madison County man is behind bars following the death of 12-year-old Hannah Marie Ford of Orange County.  The girl died after a single-vehicle crash that happened at 3:40 a.m. Tuesday on Route 230 in the Radiant area of Madison County.

State Police say 34-year-old Paul Vernon Welcher, Junior of Madison lost control of the vehicle and it overturned and Ford was ejected.  She died at the scene.  Welcher’s 12-year-old daughter was also a passenger.  The girl and her father were transported to the University of Virginia Hospital where they were treated and released.

Welcher is now in the Central Virginia Regional Jail in Orange.  He’s been charged with driving with a suspended license, felony child endangerment and violation of a protective order.
