CHARLOTTESVILLE (WINA) – The advisory committee formed to recommend a name for a new Albemarle County charter school has chosen Rose Hill Community School. The new grades 6-through-12 school will open its doors to students for the first time September 8. The building is Murray High School where students who were attending Community Public Charter School will join.
Head Teacher for the new school, Stephanie Passman, also facilitated the committee. She said the committee is very excited over their name choice as the school not only sits in the historic Rose Hill neighborhood, but for returning the building to the Rose Hill name. The building is the old Rose Hill Elementary, which was built in 1959 as a school for black children. Some of the historical significance is 16 or the 26 children who integrated Albemarle schools went there. It’s also where Asalie Preston taught. She spent the final 9 years at Rose Hill of her 44 years teaching African-American children.
Passman says they’re formally present the name to Superintendent Matt Haas July 9th, and he will make a recommendation to the school board, taking the committee recommendation under advisement. The school board will make the name decision in an August meeting.
