UVA Marks Anniversary Of Berlin Wall Falling

Photo: WINA

A large crowd assembled Sunday evening near the University of Virginia’s Alderman Library to admire a portion of the Berlin Wall. The ceremony coincided with the 25th anniversary of the tearing down of the wall. The panels that are now on display are on loan to UVA by Robert and MeiLi Hefner.

UVA President Teresa Sullivan says the events of November 1989 capped a long struggle for political freedom in Eastern Europe. The crowd included outgoing Miller Center director Gerald Baliles, who was Virginia’s Governor in November 1989. Baliles says the tearing down of the wall had an impact far beyond East and West Berlin.
