A University of Virginia student has died from injuries he received in a car accident over the weekend.

Below is a Community Alert from the University of Virginia.

To the University Community:

It is with profound sadness that I write to inform you of the death of fourth-year student Kurt Jesperson Hilburger. We were informed by family that Kurt passed away earlier today of injuries he sustained in a car accident this past weekend. Hailing from Williamsburg, Va., he was pursuing an interdisciplinary major in archaeology and an anthropology major in the College. Kurt lived in Brown Residential College his first through third years and was an active member of that community, serving on the governing board.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Kurt’s parents, John and Jill Hilburger, other family members, and his many friends at UVa and beyond. Information on services for Kurt are not available at this time.

The loss of a young, vibrant member of our community is heart-rending. I encourage you to reach out to one another for comfort and support in this time of sadness and grief. With the death of Margaret Lowe on Sept. 1, the fourth-year class has lost two members in one month’s time. I recognize the impact these losses have upon our shared community.

Any student who wishes to speak with a counselor may call Counseling and Psychological Services at 434-243-5150 during the regular business hours of 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.(Monday through Friday). After hours, the number to call is 434-972-7004. Information about CAPS is available at www.virginia.edu/studenthealth/caps.html.

Faculty and staff can find a similar resource through the Faculty and Employee Assistance Program by calling 434-243-2643 or by emailing the office via the website at www.healthsystem.virginia.edu/pub/feap/general-information.

Please support and look out for each other, consistent with the values of our community.

Sincerely,

Allen W. Groves
University Dean of Students
