The woman who survived the on-air killing of two TV journalists has been released from the hospital. Vicki Gardner was released Monday from Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital.
Gardner, the executive director of the Smith Mountain Lake Chamber of Commerce, was answering questions about the 50th anniversary of Smith Mountain Lake on live TV when she was shot and wounded. WDBJ-7’s Alison Parker and Adam Ward were killed. The injured woman’s husband, Tim Gardner, says doctors removed one kidney and part of her colon.
Local Chamber of Commerce president Tim Hulbert is close friends with Vicki Gardner and her husband. He learned by email that Gardner had been shot, but says that pales in comparison to what her husband had to endure. The suspected gunman, Vester Lee Flanagan, took his own life on Interstate-66 in Fauquier County as police were searching for him.
