(MINNEAPOLIS, MN) The University of Virginia Men’s Basketball program finished off one of the most remarkable turnaround stories in sports history by winning its first National Championship in program history Monday night. UVA defeated Texas Tech 85-77 in overtime in one of the most thrilling title games in recent memory. The Cavaliers led by as many as ten points in regulation but could not hold on to the lead as Texas Tech answered with a furious charge to take the lead late in the game. With less than fifteen seconds to play UVA trailed by three when De’Andre Hunter caught a pass from Ty Jerome for a corner three that sent the game into overtime. Hunter’s clutch shots continued to power the Wahoos to victory in overtime, as he would finish with 27 points to lead all scorers. UVA was perfect from the free throw line in overtime going 14-14 from the stripe. The big three was special as a group as Kyle Guy scored 24 points, and Ty Jerome contributed 16 points in the win. It is the first NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship in school history and UVA is the first team from the state of Virginia ever to win the title, and the Hoos finish 35-3 on this historic season.
