CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – Gas prices are slightly down from a week ago nationally and in Virginia, though the Charlottesville area has not seen the same decline, according to a new AAA survey.

The national price for a gallon of regular unleaded dropped to $4.03, six cents lower than the same time the week before, according to the survey released on Thursday.

In Virginia, the average was 3.93, two cents lower than the last week.

However, Charlottesville’s average, while lower than both of those averages at 3.92, was the same week-over-week.

Those prices were still up over a month ago and well up over the same time last year.

The national average was 3.17 the same week of 2025. Virginia was 3.01 and Charlottesville was 3.03.

“Pump prices are the highest they’ve been during this time of year since 2022, when the national average on April 23 was $4.11,” Triple-A Mid-Atlantic spokesperson Morgan Dean told Cville Right Now. “The drop comes as crude oil prices dropped below $100-a-barrel.”

In fact, at one point Friday, the price dropped briefly to $93 before rebounding up again.

“The relief may be short-lived as geopolitical instability near the Strait of Hormuz continues to create uncertainty in the global oil market,” Dean said.

He added demand was down slightly over the last week, but that will be temporary as more drivers are expected to hit the road as the weather gets warmer.
