CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW)- Virginia women’s basketball’s furious second-half comeback bid fell short, as Cal held on for a 64-58 win Thursday at Haas Pavilion in Berkeley, Cal.

The Bears outscored the Hoos 28-14 in the second quarter to take a 45-29 lead at halftime. Virginia came out of the locker room swinging, outscoring Cal to cut the lead down to two with two minutes to play. But too many missed shots in the final minute of play forced Virginia to foul and gradually fall from striking distance.

Tabitha Amanze led the way for the Hoos (17-8, 9-5ACC) with 14 points. Kymora Johnson also finished in double digits with 11, and Sa’Myah Smith added 10.

The Hoos, who sit in a three-way tie for sixth place in the ACC standings with Clemson and Virginia Tech, square off with the Stanford Cardinal in game two of their West Coast road trip Sunday at at 2 p.m. on WINA.
