PARIS, FRANCE (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – UVA tennis alumna Danielle Collins ended her singles campaign at the Paris Olympics yesterday (July 31, 2024) in a match against five-time Grand Slam champion Iga Swiatek.
This marks a difficult end to an important campaign for Collins, who is in her final year as a professional tennis player. She announced her intention to retire following the 2024 season.
The two tennis stars were locked in a tight battle, each having won one set. However, after taking a medical timeout five points into the third set, Collins chose to retire from the match, allowing Swiatek to advance to the next round. It was initially unclear why Collins retired so suddenly, but she later revealed it was due to a muscle injury in her stomach caused by severe dehydration during matches on Tuesday.
High temperatures in Paris reached 97 degrees both days, posing concerns across multiple competitions. The heat was particularly challenging on the clay courts at Roland Garros Stadium, where the tennis matches were held.
