CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – With the start of April 21 referendum early voting across the Commonwealth Friday, Albemarle County’s new voter registrar is alerting voters of a new room where residents are voting at this time.

The building is the same, the County Office Building 5th Street Annex where the voting registration office resides.

But the room voting is happening during the referendum is Conference Room B in the interior of the building, instead of Conference Room A which is a room on the exterior part of the building.

County Voting Registrar Jonell McFadden told Cville Right Now, “You’re coming inside the front doors to your right and there will be signage there and elections officers leading people and pointing them in the right direction.”

McFadden said early voting in Albemarle County runs through April 18 Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

There will be voting on two Saturdays, April 11 and 18, during those same hours.

As Cville Right Now was speaking with McFadden, she and the elections team had just finished stuffing mail-in ballots for a Friday mailing for the approximately 7000 registered voters who had already requested them.

“The deadline to request a mail-in ballot is Friday, April 10 at 5 p.m.,” McFadden said.

For those who have requested a mail-in ballot, McFadden urges them to wait a few days before coming in attempting to use their ballot to vote.

“We would like for you to wait until you get it, we’re just mailing them, and a lot of times we’ll have people show up on Day One in-person because they haven’t received their absentee ballot yet.”

While there’s no voter ID law in Virginia, it’s advisable to bring some form of ID.

McFadden said, “What you need is a valid form of identification, and you’ll find those different forms of identification on the Department of Elections website.”

According to that website, “Voters may provide either an acceptable form of ID or sign an ID Confirmation Statement at the polls.”

“If you get to your polling place without acceptable ID, you can sign an ID statement affirming your identity, you will be able to vote a regular ballot.”

“If you do not sign an ID statement to affirm your identity you may vote a provisional ballot. You will be provided instructions to ensure your vote will count,” according to the VDOE.

The deadline to register to vote is Tuesday, April 14

McFadden urges people coming in to vote to be careful, “Because there’s quite a bit of construction as they’re building a roundabout at the entrance to the building, so just follow the construction signs to get in here.”

Charlottesville’s early voting location is the City Hall Annex at in Room 142.

They’re open Monday through Friday through April 17 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

They’ll also be open for early voting on Saturdays, April 11 and 18 from 8:30 a.m. through 5 p.m.

The Charlottesville registrar website advised, “The City of Charlottesville Ballot Drop Box is available 24/7, beginning on Friday, March 6, 2026. It is located directly outside of our office and is marked ‘City of Charlottesville Official Ballot Drop Box’.”

Voters can check their registration status using the online Citizen Portal.
