CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) Sally Duncan said the strength of her campaign for a spot on the Albemarle County Board of Supervisors was effort.
“I worked really hard. I door-knocked on so many doors and I really saw that play out today in the people who showed up at the polls,” Duncan told Cville Right Now on Tuesday night. “I had social media ads, I had TV ads, I had radio ads. Running a campaign and doing the work really matters and I think it really paid off.”
Duncan appeared on her way to winning the Democratic primary for the Jack Jouett District spot on the board Tuesday. With all three precincts reporting as of 9 p.m., Duncan led David Shreve, with Duncan holding 61.68% of the votes, a 726-451 margin.
Mail-in and provisional ballots still need to be counted.
Duncan said her focus on affordable housing was something that resonated with county voters.
“My message was about addressing the affordable housing crisis,” Duncan said. “We have a housing shortage.”
With no Republican or independent candidates on the ballot in November, only an unusually large write-in campaign could deny Duncan the seat on the board.
Duncan spent her day visiting polling stations in the three precincts in the district, before heading to her watch party at Selvedge Brewing.
“At the polls, people were very enthusiastic,” Duncan said. “They were coming out, giving us thumbs up, saying ‘I voted for you.’ It felt like things were trending in the right direction.”
