CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) — The City of Charlottesville will be making water line improvements during daytime hours that will affect traffic on Barracks Rd. starting on Monday.

The city will be working on bringing the water system that services homes and buildings located between Blue Ridge Rd. and Rugby Rd., as well as Mason Lane, along the busy thoroughfare up to the current industry standard.

The process will increase the efficiency of fire flow in the area for safety reasons, as well as other improvements that align with ongoing citywide infrastructure refinements.

“The pipes that have been in the ground have been in the ground since the ’60s. It’s time for it to be brought up to industry standards.” Caleb Smith, a traffic engineer with the City of Charlottesville, told Cville Right Now.

The work will also include the length of Buckingham Rd. that intersects with Barracks Rd. on the other side.

Crews will be at work on Barracks Rd. from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. Monday through Friday.  During daylight hours, one lane of Barracks Road will be closed to traffic and a detour, notated by orange signs, will be in place.

Work at night will begin one week later on June 29, and Barracks Rd. will be closed completely to through traffic from 9 p.m. until 5 a.m.

Smith said the work affecting traffic on Barracks Rd. will likely conclude after 12 weeks, with the work set to finish around Sept. 7.
