CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – Virginia women’s basketball triumphed over Miami 67-56 at home on Thursday night, picking up an important win as the regular season winds down.

Facing a team of comparable size to their own, the Wahoo (16-7) front court found an extra gear and notched 28 points in the paint and 20 off second chances.  The Hoos also added 20 points off of the Hurricanes’ 20 turnovers. Miami’s (12-11) has struggled with turnovers this season, averaging 15.9 per game, the sixth most in the ACC.

Kymora Johnson led all scorers with 18 points as well as five assists and six rebounds.  In a game that saw her make four 3-pointers, she now holds UVA’s program record for 3-point makes in a single season with 71.  Her backcourt partner Paris Clark and freshman star Caitlin Weimar each chipped in with seven rebounds. Weimer and fellow freshman Gabby White scored 10 points with Clark adding nine as well.

On the other side, Miami center Ra’Shaya Kyle finished with a double-double, 13 points and ten rebounds. But while the Hoos ended the first half behind by a point, they outscored the Canes 22-11 in the third quarter alone and never relinquished the lead again.

Up next, Virginia will face the Notre Dame Fighting Irish at John Paul Jones Arena this Sunday at 2 p.m.
